Terra Incognita - A land art exhibition featuring over 25 artists and performers
August 19th, 20th, 26th and 27th - 10am - 4pm
For more information and tickets visit - www.verdancyproject.com/terra-incognita
Terra Incognita is an interdisciplinary, site-specific land art exhibition featuring over twenty-five artists exploring mindful interaction and collaboration with the site: a 4.5-acre microcosm of natural elements featuring woodlands, fields, pond, dye garden, and a creek.
With the starting point of terra incognita or “unknown territory” – referring to both land or mental exploration – the artists were invited to conceive new works inspired by and/or integrated into this landscape. Keeping in mind their role as stewards of the land, the artists use natural and sustainable materials to creatively chart new territory, enchanting and surprising viewers. The resulting artworks will be immersive and intimate activations of the land, water, and trees, through built earthworks, installations, sculptures, sound installations, performance art, and more. Visitors are invited to come and be inspired, challenged, and delighted.

Leah Jay utilizes the natural qualities of water-based media on paper to capture the sacred and transformational nature of the living world.

Stroll the grounds of The Verdancy Project collecting botanical specimens to create your own beautiful and ghostly color prints. Each person attending this workshop will create a bundle of their own beautiful lumen prints – a cameraless photographic process – and be equipped with the skills and knowledge to continue creating lumen prints.
Each unique lumen print is one of a kind revealing an astonishing array of images from representational to absolute abstractions of color, shape, and form that celebrate the beauty and uniqueness of nature.
A lumen print is essentially a solar photogram – a camera-less process involving black and white photographic paper, a subject matter that usually (but not always) consists of organic material, and the most important element, the Sun or a UV source.
Ages 10 and up. All levels are welcome in this workshop.

Opening Reception May 6th, 5pm - 8pm
Artist in Gallery May 7th, 12pm-1pm

Throughout history and across cultures, insects have inspired artists to create artwork that celebrates the beauty of and challenges viewers to shift their perspectives on these magnificent and essential creatures. Insects are everywhere. They are, by far, the most common animals on our planet: more than 1.5 million species of insects have been identified. Without insects, our lives would be vastly different. Insects pollinate our fruits, flowers, and vegetables. They are essential as primary or secondary decomposers, and they are a major food source for amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals.
Shannon Amidon's exhibit Agents of Nature is a love letter to the critical roles that insects play in the environment. Her elegant works made from a variety of natural elements such as encaustic, gold leaf, pyrite, insect wings, and vintage ephemera celebrate the many contributions insects make to the natural world. These numerous and delicate pieces hold a hint of warning of what can be lost to future generations. Her emphatic use of encaustic is particularly poignant as this ancient medium of molten beeswax used throughout history since the ancient Greek and Egyptian times cannot exist without the survival of bees. By portraying the cycles of life, death, and impermanence in her work, Amidon calls attention to the importance of insects, inviting viewers to see nature not as a backdrop but as a vital element of our existence.

They may be small, and we may not always notice them, but insects are the dominant form of animal life on this planet! Close to a million species of insects have been described to date and those insects are the linchpins of the living world, carrying out many of the functions that make life possible. However, studies have shown that insect populations are in a steep decline. From habitat loss and degradation, to pollution, pesticides, climate change, and disease – these essential creatures are in jeopardy.
A portion of all artwork sales will go to the Xerces Society, a Portland-based nonprofit focused on research and conservation of invertebrates.
I am honored to be a part of this panel of artists speaking about trees.
The beauty and mystery of trees has long been a subject for artists, and more recently, concern for the survival of forests (the lungs of our planet) has been paramount. Each month, artists working in a diversity of media share their artworks and ideas about these most essential and extraordinary living beings. Additionally, guest speakers including scientists, writers and activists are invited to present their work and contribute to the dialogue.
Tree Talk is moderated by Sant Khalsa, ecofeminist artist and activist, whose work has focused on critical environmental and societal issues including forests and watersheds for four decades.

29th Street Women
You can see my artwork in this exhibit here:
https://vashoncenterforthearts.org/2020/04/03/29th-street-women/
Over the last year, the 29th Street Women, a collective of five Oregon artists—Shannon Amidon, Barb Burwell, Pamela Chipman, Kim Lakin, and Kirista Trask—have been meeting in a studio on NW 29th Street in Portland to give one another professional support, critique each other’s work, and build conversations about key issues facing female artists. After reading Ninth Street Women, they were inspired to build a broader conversation about what they’d learned. The book is a social biography of five abstract expressionists—women working in New York in the mid-20th Century: Grace Hartigan, Helen Frankenthaler, Elaine de Kooning, Lee Krasner, and Joan Mitchell. Struck by their predecessors’ stylistic innovations and courage, the five Oregonians decided to pay tribute.
And so the the 29th Street Women show was born—an exhibit that features the collective’s artwork while also honoring the five New York artists whose daring has been so meaningful to its members. Each artist focuses on a single member of the Ninth Street Women, learning about her aesthetics as well as the obstacles she overcame. The collective’s work is not derivative of the pieces created by the earlier artists. Instead, it aims to celebrate their achievements and educate the public about their lives and work. To that end, the exhibit is complemented by informational panels about each of the groundbreaking artists.
The 29th Street Women links the past with the present and the east coast with the west, drawing connections and building awareness about the lives of those women whose break with convention has provided such inspiration to female artists in the 21st century.
Whitney Modern Gallery is pleased to present 31 Women, an exhibition curated by Marianne McGrath with Karen Gutfreund and Suzanne Whitney-Smedt. 31 Women celebrates the work of 31 female artists in honor of Women’s History Month.
This exhibit is now online, you can view all of the artwork at: http://www.whitneymodern.com/Exhibit_Detail.cfm?ShowsID=100
Women’s History Month annually commemorates women’s contributions to history, culture and society throughout the United States. 2020 is an especially exciting and powerful year for women as it is also the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which granted the right to vote to women in the United States. Highlighted individually throughout the exhibition are each artist’s process and inspiration, as well as her sense of connection to women in history and art history.
Along with the show at Whitney Modern, artists will be featured on social media, blogs, websites and in the gallery – one woman a day for the month of March. This aspect of the show is intended to be a virtual exhibition that will be available to those out of the area, and it provides an opportunity to focus on a particular woman artist, emphasizing her unique practice and contributions to the art community.
Blind Insect Gallery presents Where the Wild Things Grow, featuring artwork by Portland based artist Shannon Amidon.
You can now see all of the artwork including a gallery walk through online at: https://www.shannonamidon.com/blog/where-the-wild-things-grow
Luminescent, richly layered and detailed encaustic (molten beeswax) paintings honor untamed landscapes and strive to bring focus to the importance of habitat conservation. Never before have we seen such an alarming decline in biodiversity on our planet. There are fewer and fewer places left on earth that have remained untouched and unharmed by humans.
Amidon’s paintings of wild plants, grasses and trees remind us of the beauty and wonder of nature and that by conserving and protecting these habitats, we are ensuring that future generations can enjoy our natural world and the incredible species that live within it.
In addition to original paintings Shannon will also have a limited number of smaller, original cyanotypes available featuring wild flowers and plants.
Contemporary encaustic artwork by Shannon Amidon. Reclaimed and earth friendly materials used to create timeless, layered, natural motifs. Inspired by the briefness of life & the wonders of the natural world.
